Which rope should you choose? There are dozens of climbing ropes for arborists on the market. Most of them work. But the right rope for your technique, your weight, and your prusik material makes a difference every day.
This guide covers the best climbing ropes of 2026 — from beginner choices to high-performance SRT ropes, with real-world elongation data.
DRT or SRT — what affects rope choice?
In DRT (Doubled Rope Technique), the rope is installed in a crotch and you climb on the middle. The rope is loaded with half body weight per side. You want a soft rope that runs easily through the prusik and is forgiving with different prusik materials.
In SRT (Single Rope Technique), you climb along a fixed rope with a mechanical ascender. The rope takes full body weight and works more against the climbing device than against the friction hitch. You want a stiffer, dimensionally stable rope that holds its shape under load and does not expand when pulled.
Most ropes on this list work for both techniques. You'll notice the difference when you specialize.
Elongation — what the numbers actually mean
Elongation is measured as a percentage extension under load, usually at 50–150 kg. Low elongation means the rope responds directly when you load it. This makes SRT ascents more efficient and provides clearer feedback from the system.
Higher elongation gives more bounce in DRT and can be softer on the body — but it makes the system harder to control if you want to work precisely in position. For those climbing with mechanical devices like Akimbo or ZigZag, you want elongation under 2.5%. Under 2% is good. Under 1.5% is excellent.
The numbers below are taken directly from the respective manufacturer's technical specifications.

Elongation measured at 50–150 kg according to EN 1891. Tachyon uses a progressive elongation curve (low at low load, high at high load).
XStatic — lowest elongation on the market
XStatic in 11.7 mm is an SRT rope with 1.4% elongation — the lowest on this list. It is a kernmantle rope with a 32-plait sheath, manufactured in the USA, and sold by the meter from 40 SEK. Certified EN 1891A and ANSI Z133.
The smooth sheath provides minimal bounce during descent and easy retrieval even with multiple redirections. It's not primarily a prusik rope — the smooth sheath is better suited for mechanical devices. Note: not splicesble.
Buy the exact length you need. 45 meters gives you plenty of margin for most jobs.
Tango StatX — low elongation with splice
Tango StatX 11.5 mm is one of the few ropes on the market that combines 1.5% elongation with a certified splice — making it equally useful in DRT as in SRT. Manufactured by DRAYER with a 32-plait polyester sheath and polyamide core. Certified EN 1891A. Price: 1,920 SEK for 45 meters including splice.
It is a stiffer rope than Gravity and Kalimba. It stays a bit more fixed in the device and runs with more resistance through a crotch. But precisely because of its low elongation, it makes ascent efficient — every step provides direct response. Best first rope for those who know they want to do SRT from the start but still want the DRT flexibility.
Courant Kalimba — versatile with a soft grip
Courant Kalimba 11.9 mm has a 24-plait polyester sheath and X-Braid polyamide core. Elongation: 1.8% at 50–150 kg. Weight: 99.9 g/m. Price: 2,320 SEK for 45 meters.
Kalimba is designed to perform equally well in DRT and SRT. Its soft 24-plait sheath with a narrow splice allows it to run smoothly through blocks and devices. The X-Braid core provides dimensional stability under load. It's a popular choice among those switching from Gravity and wanting lower elongation without losing the soft feel.
Available in three bright colors for easy identification in the canopy.
Teufelberger Tachyon — progressive elongation for experienced climbers
Tachyon 11.5 mm with 2 spLIFE costs 2,480 SEK. It is a rope with a progressive elongation curve: low elongation at low load — which gives little bounce — and higher elongation at high load to absorb shock loads. Polyester sheath with 24-braids and polyamide core with Flexifirm technology that maintains constant diameter under load.
Tachyon is not a beginner's rope. It requires more precise prusik material matching and the feel in hand differs from thicker ropes. But for those who know what they're doing, it's one of the best performing ropes on the market for mechanical SRT.
Teufelberger Gravity — the safe all-round choice
Gravity 11.5 mm is the beginner's recommendation. Soft, 2.0% elongation, good prusik compatibility. Works in DRT and SRT. 35 meters costs 1,900 SEK. The rope most instructors use as a reference.
Teufelberger drenaLINE — by the meter, all-round
drenaLINE 11.8 mm is sold by the meter from 35 SEK. Elongation 2.3%. 32-plait polyester sheath, nylon core. Certified EN 1891A. Good if you want to cut to the exact right length or have a backup rope in the car.
Cousin Atrax — affordable DRT rope
Cousin Atrax 11.6 mm is a soft, forgiving rope from French Cousin Trestec. Elongation: 2.8%. Patented thin splice compatible with ZigZag and Spiderjack 3. From 1,060 SEK depending on length. Good DRT rope at a price below the Teufelberger series.
Petzl Control — for mechanical systems
Petzl Control 12.5 mm with spLIFE. Elongation 3.1%. The large diameter provides good grip and is specifically optimized for Petzl's ZigZag and ZigZag Plus — the patented splice passes the friction hitch in the device without friction. 45 meters costs 2,360 SEK.
Higher elongation than the rest on the list, but it's a deliberate design choice — the rope absorbs more shock load which makes it more forgiving in ZigZag systems.
Maintenance and lifespan
Run your hand along the entire rope with each use and feel for knots, soft spots, or irregularities in the core. Outer wear on the sheath is normal; exposed core is a stop condition.
Wash in cold water, hang to dry out of direct sunlight. Store shaded and away from chemicals. Document age and hours — most manufacturers recommend retirement after 10 years regardless of visible condition.
