The Portawrap is a lightweight and compact rope friction device designed for controlled lowering of heavy timber. Designed by arborists Scott Prophett and Norm Hall in the early 90s, the Portawrap has proven to be a highly reliable and effective tool for minimizing damage caused by free-falling tree sections. Previously, the ground worker's primary alternative was to wrap the rope around a nearby tree, which often resulted in bark damage to the "wrap tree" due to friction. With the Portawrap, the modern arborist can quickly prepare the device for multiple lowering tasks in the time it took to wrap the rope around a tree. The Portawrap is quickly wrapped and unwrapped between loads, making timber lowering from trees a smooth process in a compact format. Unlike the varying surface of a tree trunk, the Portawrap provides predictable and constant friction, allowing the ground worker to focus on the dynamics above.

The Portawrap has excellent corrosion resistance. Its stainless steel construction can withstand extreme conditions such as high heat, salt, and humidity in coastal environments. The main tube is seamless for an optimal strength-to-weight ratio, and all edges are chamfered to eliminate sharp corners. A special feature is the tree-protective cover that prevents damage to the tree when loaded with heavy loads.
